Niagara-on-the-Lake\u2019s first craft brewery is about to open.<\/p>\n<p>Brewery partners Mike Berlis, Cian MacNeill and Kevin Somerville\u2014all from Niagara region\u2014expect to open the doors of\u00a0<a title=\"Oast House Brewers in Niagara-on-the-Lake\" href=\"http:\/\/oasthousebrewers.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Niagara Oast House Brewers<\/a>\u00a0within the next few weeks. \u201cOur approach complements the area\u2019s wine and gourmet tradition while adding a whole new dimension,\u201d says MacNeill, the brewery\u2019s marketing manager. \u201cCraft beer consumers have a lot in common with fine wine consumers, so Oast House is using the winery model by offering tours, tastings, and special events\u2014including brewmaster\u2019s dinners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>MacNeill tells me the brewery has enlisted local farmers to grow its hops. \u201cLike the terroir wines whose tastes vary with different soils, we plant hops in three different locations\u2014on the bench, in the interior and by the lake,\u201d he says. Brewmaster Kevin Somerville brings credentials from North American and European schools, and has worked at the\u00a0<a title=\"Niagara College Brewery\" href=\"http:\/\/www.firstdraft.ca\/content\" target=\"_blank\">Niagara College Brewing Program<\/a>.
