Hallowe’en fun in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

Hallowe’en fun in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

Widely considered Canada’s most haunted town, Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL) is the place to be on Hallowe’en. You’ll be in good company: Famous ghosts include Captain Colin Swayze, a Canadian militia officer killed in 1813 at the Angel Inn, where reports of eerie nighttime shenanigans date back to the 1820s. In Queen’s Royal Park, the ethereal “Woman in White” is said to linger nightly at the gorgeous gazebo, still longing for her lost love after almost a century. And at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, the cemetery is the final home of many War of 1812 casualties, some of whom do not reportedly rest in peace.

Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory staff show off their Hallowe’en treats, which include a full-sized chocolate skull.

Ghost tours and antics

For a more formal introduction to the spirits, you can sign up for a number of different ghost tours.

Fort George is hosting special Hallowe’en ghost tours on October 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 27, 30 and 31. They start at 7, 7:15, 7:30, 10, 10:15 and 10:30 p.m. Tickets are $17 and you must buy them in advance by calling 905-468-6621.

The guides from Ghost Walks and Dark History Tours will regale you with stories on an entertaining jaunt to the haunted parts of town. Extra tours around Hallowe’en make sure everyone gets a shot at meeting some spectres. Tickets are $13 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for kids 13 and under.

The Haunted Shop on Queen Street will give you the shivers as you browse for creepy gifts and treats. Be sure to ask about the resident apparition.

On my last Hallowe’en visit to NOTL, my Niagara B&B hosts lent me their book, Ghosts of Niagara-on-the-Lake by Maria Da Silva and Andrew Hind. This is a comprehensive and fascinating look into the NOTL spirit world. And of course, Niagara B&B owners know all the stories—some even have phantom guests.

IMG_5933Palette Knife with Oils Workshop

Led by Anne Reimer

Saturday, May 4 at RiverBrink Art Museum

Following a successful series of artist’s demonstrations over the fall and winter, RiverBrink is pleased to announce the second of its artist’s workshops. Under the tutelage of noted painter Anne Reimer, participants will create their own autumn landscape painting, using the techniques taught in the workshop.

Anne Reimer fall painting_6232Anne Reimer will conduct a mini-workshop in palette knife application of oil paint. In this “beginner” workshop, students will create their own fall landscape while learning the principles of colour and design. Anne invites you to learn the many ways you can use the palette knife, sometimes working with a full blade or with the tip to create the texture you desire. Although it would be beneficial to have some knowledge of oil paint, beginners to this medium are welcome to join the class.

Anne is known for her intuitive sense of colour, and her love and understanding of nature.  Her inspirations come from the beauty of area scenes and travels, depicting barns, mills, and capturing still life from her garden.  The Niagara Region offers her this wealth of resources.

Anne was born in Paraguay, South America, and immigrated to Canada in 1955 at the age of 16.  Her art training from Art Instruction Schools Home Study Course has helped her gain much understanding of the fundamentals of art.  Feeling a deep love for fine art, she has been inspired to perfect her technique in oil, watercolour, and mixed media.

Date Saturday, May 4.
Time:  10:30 am to 2:30 pm (half hour lunch break in between)Please bring a bagged lunch.  Coffee and tea will be provided.
Cost:  $45.00 ($25 fees and $20 for materials:  includes stretched canvas, 11” x 14”; oil paint and palette knife).
Class size:  10  students

To register please contact RiverBrink by phone 905-262-4510 or by email to manager@riverbrink.

Wine & Herb Touring Pass event returns in May 2013

ENTERTAINMENT: Wine & Herb Touring Pass event returns in May

NIAGARA – The Wine & Herb Touring Pass Event returns in May 2013 and brings with it 27 unique VQA wine and food pairings created by the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Wine & Herb takes place Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in May from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Wine & Herb is a casual, light-hearted event that is ideal for guests exploring the art of pairing wine with food, and Niagara-on-the-Lake wine country,” says Tim Coons, Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake Touring Events Committee Chair.

Each winery’s approach to wine and food pairing is as unique as the winery itself, resulting in 27 distinct offerings, some of which feature newly released wines and wines only available at the winery.

Highlighting the TripAdvisor ranking of Niagara-on-the-Lake as Canada’s #1 Food and Wine Destination (Travellers’ Choice, 2011), a number of wineries are working closely with in-house chefs, or local restaurants and suppliers. The result is an array of wine and food pairings that use the featured herb and regional ingredients in fresh and innovative ways.

Local garden centre, Mori Gardens is once again partnering with the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake and supplying the herbs on display at each winery.

Touring passes are $43 per person (plus HST), entitling the holder to a VQA wine and food pairing at each of the 27 Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake and can be used any event weekend.

Touring passes can be purchased online at www.wineriesofniagaraonthelake.com/wine-herb or by calling 905.468.1950. They will be available for purchase at Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake in April 2013.

Designated driver touring passes are $35 per person (plus HST) and entitle the holder to a food pairing and non-alcoholic beverage at each of the 27 Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Designated driver touring passes are valid any event weekend and can be purchased online at www.wineriesofniagaraonthelake.com/wine-and-herb or by calling 905.468.1950. Limit one per purchase.

Learn more about the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake by visiting www.wineriesofniagaraonthelake.com or www.facebook.com/wineriesofniagaraonthelake.

Every day the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake welcome guests into wine country to savour the richness of the region and to experience the 27 distinct wineries, each with its own personality reflected in the wines they craft. The members of Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake are: Between the Lines, Cattail Creek, Château des Charmes, Colaneri, Coyote’s Run, Diamond Estates, Hinterbrook, Inniskillin, Jackson Triggs, Joseph’s, Konzelmann, Lailey, Marynissen, Niagara College, Palatine Hills, Peller Estates, Pillitteri, PondView, Ravine, Reif, Riverview, Small Talk Vineyards, Southbrook, Stratus, Strewn, Sunnybrook Farm and Trius Winery.
