NEW YEARS EVE IN NIAGARA

MORE WAYS TO USHER IN THE NEW YEAR!!

There will be plenty of ways to welcome the start of 2013. Whether it’s New Year’s Eve events you’re looking for or a new tradition for New Year’s Day, Niagara-on-the-Lake and surrounding areas have you covered. Here’s a rundown on what you can do to welcome the new year:

• Party the night away at the old courthouse downtown with the St. Andrew’s Society. The New Year’s Eve Ball will feature live music by the 5th Avenue Dance Band, a gourmet dinner and a bagpiper ringing in the new year around the cenotaph/clock tower on Queen Street at midnight.

Organizer Margaret Middleton said the event is always a fun time and is open to the whole community. The evening starts with cocktails at 7:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 8:30. The meal includes appetizers, leek and potato soup with aged cheddar and two choices of mains, wine-braised boneless short ribs or pan-roasted filet of salmon with wild forest mushroom cream. Dessert is included. There will be a cash bar for the evening and the dress code is formal, men can wear suits, tuxedos or kilts. Tickets are $90 per person and must be purchased in advance.

For tickets contact Middleton at    905-468-1539       or email mwmiddleton@cogeco.ca.

• Niagara Falls will be playing host to one of the largest New Year’s Eve parties in the country with thousands of people heading down to the brink of the world-famous falls to welcome the new year. Live performances for the Dec. 31 event include Dragonette, Hedley and Nelly Furtado.

The free show kicks off at 7:30 p.m. in Queen Victoria Park. Presented by the Niagara Parks Commission and Entertainment Tonight (ET) Canada, the event will air live on TV for those preferring to stay at home. The evening also includes two fireworks display. For full details visit www.niagaraparks.com/nye.

• On Jan. 1, 2013 the Royal Canadian Legion General Nelles br. 124 will once again host its annual New Year’s Day Levee to welcome the new year. The whole community is invited out to reflect back on the year that just passed and to toast the year to come. The event will run from 1-4 p.m. at the Legion hall at 410 King St. There will be light food and refreshments available.

• When all of the partying is said and done, don’t forget to hold on to those extra bottles. The Newark Squadron 809 Air Cadets will once again be conducting a holiday bottle collection drive. On Jan. 5 the cadets will conduct door-to-door pick-ups of bottles in Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Old Town, Garrison Village, Queenston, St. Davids and Virgil. The pick-ups will take place between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Those who prefer to drop off their bottles can do so at Van Noort Greenhouses, 2069 Creed Rd., at the corner of Hunter Rd. on Jan. 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

What to do in Niagara on the Lake

ACTIVITIES IN  NIAGARA ON THE LAKE
I have been told there are druids in our midst, and a lone beautiful fir in the nearby forest, currently bedecked with shiny baubles, may be proof. More evidence was the fairy dust and magic in the air at the Kristlemas Market at Stratus.
Everyone was sweet and joyous; the mild weather prevailed, luring folks out onto the patio to sip, savour and shop.
I’m sorry if you missed it all, including the Permtones in the press alley, but there’s hope for you yet: We plan to collaborate with Stratus on an expanded Kristlemas Market next year, among other things!
This weekend’s film at the Shaw is a popular one (W.E.), as will be the LunchMarket vendors: AVella’s Wood Fired Oven with several pizza options, and Curbside Crepes with sweet and savoury choices outside; and Lovin’ From the Oven inside with sandwiches, soup, chili, cheese trays and pomegranate panna cotta.
On the horizon, when you have made it through bustlemas and new cheers, you are invited to the Hottest Night in January: a Trinidadian Fete at the Old Winery Restaurant. The neo-Calypso, ever-adventurous band Kobo Town will keep you moving all night, even as you eat the special West-Indian-themed dishes; and you can slake your thirst with the featured rum-based cocktails. Limin’ strongly encouraged! (Thursday January 10; tickets, $15, available soon!)
Should you feel peckish and social the night before the concert, we will be relaunching the CounterCulture Supper Club on Wednesday January 9th at Balzac’s! Come and join your friends and neighbours over great food and fine spirits of all kinds—some in a glass, some in the souls sitting next to you.
So many more great things in the distance (Singles Minglecoworking! and more!), so much to look forward to. Mainly seeing you!
Merry, happy, joyous, soulful and profound wishes to all. And to all a good night!

Our Favourite Things – An Afternoon of Rodgers and Hammerstein

Sunday, November 4th, 2:30pm

Dr. J.M. Ennis Auditorium

Centennial Secondary School, Welland, ON

South Pacific

Our Favourite Things will transport audiences to the glitter and glamour of The Great White Way for an afternoon of memorable Broadway favourites from the most innovative and successful American musical theatre team.

Rodgers and HammersteinRichard Rodgers (1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (1895-1960) were one of the most influential, innovative and successful of American musical theatre writing teams, usually referred to as Rodgers and Hammerstein. They created a string of popular Broadway musicals in the 1940s and 1950s, initiating what is considered the “golden age” of musical theatre. With Rodgers composing the music and Hammerstein writing the lyrics, five of their shows, Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I and The Sound of Music, were outstanding successes.

Rodgers and Hammerstein re-worked the musical theatre genre. Breaking away from the early 20th-century musicals and their whimsical or farcical plot lines so dependent on a ‘star’, Rodgers and Hammerstein re-invented the modern American musical theatre with thought-provoking plots of emotional depth and psychological complexity along with the unbridled optimism of post WWII that marked a revolution in musical drama combining all the aspects of the play, dance, song, and drama into an integrated whole.

Joining Chorus Niagara for this afternoon of Broadway delights are the Niagara Symphony Orchestra and a trio of dazzling musical theatre artists.

HOPS AND GRAPES IN NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, ONTARIO

Oast House Brewery

Hops and grapes in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

Beer lovers rejoice! Niagara-on-the-Lake’s first craft brewery is about to open.

Brewery partners Mike Berlis, Cian MacNeill and Kevin Somerville—all from Niagara region—expect to open the doors of Niagara Oast House Brewers within the next few weeks. “Our approach complements the area’s wine and gourmet tradition while adding a whole new dimension,” says MacNeill, the brewery’s marketing manager. “Craft beer consumers have a lot in common with fine wine consumers, so Oast House is using the winery model by offering tours, tastings, and special events—including brewmaster’s dinners.”

MacNeill tells me the brewery has enlisted local farmers to grow its hops. “Like the terroir wines whose tastes vary with different soils, we plant hops in three different locations—on the bench, in the interior and by the lake,” he says. Brewmaster Kevin Somerville brings credentials from North American and European schools, and has worked at the Niagara College Brewing Program. You can follow Oast House Brewers on Facebook and Twitter.
